The MapSan trials assessed the health impacts of shared sanitation intervention in 16 low-income neighbourhoods in Maputo.

Results

In total, four investigations of the MapSan trial have taken place over the last few years. These included:

  • A pre-intervention study which involved collecting stool samples before the intervention to establish baseline data for comparison with post-intervention results.
  • A post intervention trial 12 months after the sanitation blocks were installed.
  • A post intervention trial 24 months after the sanitation blocks were installed.
  • A long-term cross sectional follow-up study 60 months after the sanitation blocks were installed.

The MapSan intervention provided a rich opportunity for additional research looking at different issues related to people’s experiences of sanitation. READ MORE.
